Opposition cannot destroy Government’s foreign agenda – Dr. Shaheed

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

Foreign Minister, Dr. Ahmed Shaheed has said that despite the mounting efforts by opposition parties to destroy government’s foreign policy, government’s foreign policy agenda would remain intact and successful.

Addressing a crowd of ruling MDP supporters at MDP Haruge, Minister Shaheed said that government’s foreign policy is transparent and pragmatic, and is being implemented very unequivocally.

Referring to opposition PA’s comments that the new government supports “white and western” countries, Foreign Minister reminded that Maldives was elected to the UN’s Human Rights Council with 185 votes on 13 May, which includes votes from “white, black, western, eastern, southern and northern countries”.

Making his point that this government enjoys support among Islamic countries, Minister also noted that very recently United Arab Emirates has informed that it is ready to host a Maldivian Embassy in UAE, with UAE’s sponsorship and noted that it was one of most prominent Islamic countries.

Dr. Shaheed also noted that one of the main aims of his Ministry is to bring home all Maldivian detainees abroad and said that 9 men in Pakistani jails were brought home earlier this year. He also confirmed his forthcoming trip to Syria, but said that the main aim of the visit is to bring two Maldivian detainees in Syria. Earlier, media has connected his Syrian visit to bringing home Guantanamo bay detainees.
