Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

Entire Maldivian cabinet has resigned unexpectedly today, over lack of cooperation from the Parliament. Members of the cabinet also highlighted that some of the recent decisions by the Parliament are unconstitutional, and because of the spirit prevailing in the parliament members could not discharge their duties.

Speaking at the press conference President Nasheed said that outgoing members of the cabinet has issued several issues with the parliament which has prevented them from doing their work at the ministries and has requested for resignation “until things can change in the parliamentary affairs of the country”.

“As per the new constitution once I receive their letters of resignation, they are not members of the Cabinet. Hence only I and Vice-President Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Maniku would be in the cabinet from now onwards” President added.

President also reiterated his position that his government is in office to fulfill its electoral pledges of the government and promised to implement them as promised. President also requested from the Parliament for cooperation in the affairs of the state rather than making things difficult for the Executive.

President also warned that as several issues were raised by the members of the cabinet against some MPs, President is obliged to investigate the concerns raised by the cabinet. President also said that the issues raised would be investigated by the Police and MNDF.

President also said that he would like to receive the letters in front of the press and received the letters one by one.

President thanked the members of the cabinet for the courage they showed and for their exemplary discipline in executing their duties.

President also assured that he do not have any plans to declare state of emergency or to start a military government in the Maldives.

  2. Harm!
Since Mr. Mohamed Nasheed is President, the Maldives have a real democracy, only the “politicians” of the opposition do not understand how one handles that, because they boycott all new one instead of working for the people and completely particularly a curtailment of her politician privileges and that of her whole relationship. “A cat doesn’t leave catching mice!”.
We tourists only can hope that the opposition members reflect and come back out from her sulking corner again, so that the Maldives are furthermore a safe and prosperous country!

    Hopeful greetings from Europe,
