Presidential Commission member resigns

Monday, April 12th, 2010

Id’ham Muizzu Adnan, a member of the Presidential Commission appointed by President Mohamed Nasheed to investigate corruption allegations in the country, has resigned on Sunday, after citing lack of “independence”, which he said is contradictory to his ethics.

Id’ham did not give details of the incidents which led him to question the independence of the Commission, but Miadhu Daily understands that it involves a high-profile businessman, who has recently joined the MDP.

“I cannot say the exact case. They are confidential information. I cannot say anything further than that.”

“I believe the commission is under huge political pressure. The commission should function fairly and in a transparent manner, sharing details of its investigations with the public” he confirmed to Miadhu Daily.

Despite the rumors, MDP Secretary-General refused to confirm that the particular businessman in question has joined MDP although he didn’t deny the rumors on joining the MDP either.

Some members of the MDP has said that they would not wish the party to welcome people who have been engaged in corruption scandals and that if the party protects such criminals, they would resign from the party. They have also said that if MDP becomes the protector of such criminals, the basic message and the platform of the party is in jeopardy.
