Family Court appeals not issue “fatwas” for private marriages

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

Family Court has urged self-proclaimed scholars not to issue “fatwas” advocating marriages outside the Family Court. Court sees such “lectures” as undermining the rights of the families.

Registrar of the Family Court, Ahmed Abdulla said that a new set of problems are arising because of such marriages. Some such couples are writing to Family court when a child is born to that family, to record the maternal and paternal details of the child.

Ahmed Abdulla also said that such actions are being justified by self-proclaimed religious scholars, but said that it is against the laws and regulations of the Maldives.

Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr. Abdul Majeed Abdul Bari, has said that marriages conducted against the laws and regulations of the Maldives would not be legal.

“As the government keeps the records of the Maldivians, ID cards, birth certificates, rules are in place for the protection of all citizens and we shall all abide by that” Islamic Affairs Minister said.
