The Maldives Establishes Diplomatic Relations with the Dominican Republic

The Republic of Maldives and the Dominican Republic established diplomatic relations, today. The Joint Communiqué formalizing diplomatic relations between the two countries was signed on behalf of the Government of Maldives, by H.E. Mr. Abdul Ghafoor Mohamed, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Maldives to the United Nations and by H.E. Mr. Federico Alberto Cuello Camilo, Permanent Representative of the Dominican Republic to the United Nations, on behalf of the Government of the Dominican Republic. The ceremony was held at the Permanent Mission of the Dominican Republic to the United Nations.

The Dominican Republic is located in the Caribbean region on the island of Hispaniola, with Haiti located on the other half of the island. The country’s political system is a representative democracy with His Excellency Mr. Leonel Antonio Fernández Reyna, who was elected to office in 1996, as the President.

The Maldives and the Dominican Republic share many international platforms including the United Nations, and the World Trade Organisation. They also share many concerns of climate change mitigation and adaptation.

The Dominican Republic is the 155th country to establish diplomatic relations with the Maldives.
