Sunday, March 21st, 2010

Department of Penitentiary and Rehabilitation Services (DPRS) has said that opportunities for rehabilitation is slim in the Maldives prison system.

Speaking to Miadhu Daily, Mohamed Rasheed, Director-General of the DPRS said apart from the rehabilitation opportunities, acceptance of the convicts back into the society is also slim in the Maldives. He also said that those who are released for payroll are eligible for payroll once they serve half of the original sentence.

Although DPRS could not manage to monitor 300 convicts who are serving a rehabilitation programme in Male’ due to lack of human resources, he said that DPRS is monitoring their movements. He also said that some of the convicts on the programme are also on jobs, but said that they will be brought back to jail if they are apprehended again.

He also said those convicts who wish to rehabilitate back into the society should be transferred to house arrest, as Maldivian jails are overcrowded. A 100 men capacity jail holds 300 convicts, according to him. He also said that on a daily basis 8 are brought into jail while only 2 will leave in a week. He also said that previously many had been released on presidential pardons, although such pardons were not issued in last two years.
