HRCM President address the Inaugural Ceremony of the Torture Victims Association

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

The President of Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has said that the most important factor in finding the truth about past human rights violations is promoting national unity and preventing the repetition of such crimes in the future.

In a pre-recorded video speech played at the official inaugural ceremony of the Torture Victims’ Association Saturday night, Saleem said that special heed should be taken to avoid breeding of hatred, enmity; creation of divisions or a spirit of vengeance in the society.

Congratulating the newly established association upon beginning its work; Saleem expressed his belief that fully investigating alleged human rights related injustices and finding out what really happened is necessary and said that since this is an immense work; a lot of preparations and an organized, elegant coordination have to be made beforehand.

Noting that supporting and helping any civil non-governmental organisation, which work without any political motivations, to promote human rights is part of the mandate of the commission as enshrined in the Human Rights Commission Act; Saleem expressed his hope that the Torture Victims Association would be such organisation that would work in collaboration with HRCM. He noted that the participation and full cooperation from all the estates of the state is necessary for this work to be effective. He also highlighted that this should be an effort carried out in a spirit of sincerity and free from any political rivalry or personal bias.
