HRCM Condemns Acts of Violence Against Media

DPRS has to take the responsibility for disturbances on 15 March

Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has condemned yesterday’s acts of violence carried out against the media. In a Press Release issued today, the HRCM condemned an incident where a group of people tried to enter the FM radio station ‘Dhifm’ and threatened and attacked ‘Dhitv’ Television Station’s staff, and another incident where a staff of ‘Haveeru’ daily newspaper was stabbed.

Noting that the motive of this criminal act was to prevent airing of news about the release of a man serving a Five year prison sentence, the HRCM expressed its concern over the unlawful release of criminals serving prison sentences in to the society. Demanding legal action to be taken against those responsible for such negligent acts of releasing criminals in to the society, the HRCM also expressed their concern over the fear created by these incidents and its impact on an already challenged freedom of the media.

HRCM’s press release was concluded by calling upon all concerned government authorities, media, civil society and the public to work in collaboration to improve the human rights situation in the Maldives and reinstating the need for a safe, peaceful environment for the full enjoyment of human rights guaranteed to all.

President of the Commission also has said that DPRS has to take the responsibility for the disturbances which occurred in Male, on 15 March.

Saleem also said that when issuing release for major criminals, we should also respect the rights of the community as a whole.
