Government to remove legal barriers on job opportunities for minors

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

Attorney-General Husnu-al-Suoodh has said that government will remove the legal barriers on job opportunities for minors above the age of 16. However, they will be able to obtain jobs that are limited to their age, according to AG.

AG’s remarks came when Miadhu Daily asked the AG if government was doing anything on the fact that most of the gang violence was being conducted by those who are aged between 15 and 22 years. Every year 10,000 students complete the GCE O’level which leaves 7000 who will have to wait for two years until they will reach the age of 18 years, minimum age of work.

AG also said that he is of the view that there is no international legal barrier for those children to work, as long as their parents approve it.

Although government is working to include those children in the social and academic programmes, lack of capacity is preventing the government from achieving a major success on that front.

As 14,000 youth will have to be enrolled annually in those programmes if it were to be successful, AG said that government is rethinking on the approach.
