Gasim says he will not join MDP

Monday, March 1st, 2010

Gasim Ibrahim MP for Maamigili constituency who is one of the richest man in the Maldives has said he will not join the ruling MDP. The statement came following rumours which have been going on for some time that Gasim who is the founder and leader of Jumhoory Party was joining MDP. However Gasim denied this story in a statement announced by his own TV channel VTV minutes before a special meeting to celebrate MDP becoming the biggest political party by membership was covered live on VTC.
Gasim has said that he will be in his party and he will continue giving his best to strengthen his Jumhoory Party by transforming the party into the most successful political party in the country. Jumhoory Party was founded just few months before the first multi-party presidential election held in October 2008. Gasim contested in the election with the present Tourism Minister Dr. Ahmed Ali Sawad as his running mate but having lost in the first round he and his party joined the MDP alliance which campaigned and won the election for MDP presidential candidate present President Mohmed Nasheed. Jumhoory Party and Adalth party joined together in the election made one of the strongest campaigns in the second round and the pleas of Gasim and Adalath Party especially its renowned scholar made a strong impact in mustering support for the MDP presidential candidate Nasheed. Gasim also begged from the
people to vote for President Nasheed if the people wants to free the country from tyranny and dictatorship.
Gasim was rewarded by President Nasheed by appointing him to the powerful post of Home Minister, his running mate Sawad was appointed Tourism Minister while Dr. Majeed Bari from Adalth Party was appointed Islamic Affairs Minister. However Gasim resigned from the post in less than a month due to apparent differences in major policies. Gasim however was nominated for reappointment by his party but the government turned down the request. He was however offered other senior posts in the Government which he declined. President Nasheed appointed senior Jumhoory Party member and former Speaker Mohamed Shihab as the new Home Minister.
In the statement last night on VTV, Gasim said those members who have left Jumhoory Party will regret it later. There are rumours Gasim may contest in the 2013 presidential election on the strength of the popularity he enjoyed from the people because of his generous philanthropic assistance.
