DRP Congress was not free and fair – Dr. Fathin Hameed
Article Tools
Dr. Fathin Hameed, a candidate for the post of deputy leader of the party has said that the elections held during the opposition DRP last month was not free and fair and that money and influence played a key role in deciding the outcome of the elections.
Speaking at DhiFM One-to-One programme, Dr. Fathin Hameed said that delegates already had specific instructions when they came to the congress and during the congress envelopes containing MRF 500 (USD 39) were distributed and some representatives were also paid with MRF 1000 (USD 78) or MRF 1500 (USD 117) each.
Expressing her displeasure on the conduct of the congress she said that she had the best agenda to democratize the party but she was defeated because of an anti-lobby against her which even spent lot of money against her candidature.
Responding to Dr. Fathin Hameed’s comments DRP spokesman and deputy leader, Ibrahim Shareef said that her failure is a result of lack of popularity among ordinary members and for understandable reasons she could not admit the defeat. Shareef also said that the candidates who lose the elections always questions the free and fairness of the elections and this is not the first time this has happened. Shareef also said that no candidate had paid the delegates in order to get elected or to prevent another candidate from getting elected.
Mohamed Saleem, DRP’s Registrar and another candidate who lost after competing for the post said that he sees Fathin Hameed as a very good academician and he is sad about the fact that she was not able to get elected to the position. Saleem also said that during the congress delegates had voted for the members who are at the forefront of the party now. He also said that if anyone desires a key post of the party, what is best is to work for the party to a level which members will acknowledge their work.
