Alhaan sent off from welcoming former President Maumoon

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

Member of MDP Parliamentary Group, Alhaan Fahumy was asked to leave from welcoming former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, when Alhaan went to the official jetty. Members of DRP who also went to the jetty to receive their honorary leader apparently were displeased to see Alhaan, their former Member who fledged to their arch rival MDP. DRP deputy leaders then met with Alhaan and requested to leave the area as his presence might create disturbances in the area. His refusal to leave led to an announcement by megaphone saying that DRP wishes that only DRP Parliamentary group members, council members and staff of the party’s secretariat be at the jetty. When he attempted to give an interview to Miadhu Daily, a larger group of DRP MPs and members approached him and requested to leave. He was then seen being escorted to nearby Shaheed Hussain Adam Building with the assistance of the Police.

Alhaan said that he went to the jetty to welcome Maldives former President who had recently received the highest award bestowed by the State of Egypt, where both Maumoon and Alhaan had graduated. Alhaan said he did not go there to welcome DRP’s honorary leader and said that DRP thinks Maumoon as part of their “own property”.

  1. Just could not figure out why Hon. Alhaan went to welcome the former President. Definitely he would have known that he would not be welcomed at the DRP gathering to receive former President. If he was so keen to welcome or wish the former President, Hon. Alhaan could have made it happen. He could have visited the residence of former President and also taken TVM crew if he wanted media and public attention.

But trying to get attention this way is just stupid. Kuda kujjee bodaa haakahen thiya ulheynee, Alhaaan.
