Actions to make government accountable should be within the law – Zuhair

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Press Secretary Mohamed Zuhair has said that the actions to make the government accountable should be within the legal boundary set out in the Constitution.

Zuhair also said that he is of the view that the current constitution both protects the rights of the individuals and set out a framework to make government accountable. Zuhair also warned that illegal action focusing on ousting a democratically elected government cannot be seen as actions to make the government accountable.

Zuhair also said that although international community does not usually enter into the internal affairs of a sovereign country, they would be monitoring the situation. He also said that international community will not buy the explanation that opposition party had ousted a democratically elected government to make it accountable.

Zuhair also said that the government policies are well defined in the strategic plan and manifesto.

Zuhair also noted that when the budget 2010 was discussed in the parliament, government had articulated its financial policy very well but it is disheartening to know that even some MPs are not aware of the government policies. Zuhair also noted that public private partnership strategies are also included in the manifesto, and without an effort to read them, opposition MPs cannot say that they do not know the government policy.

“We will listen to the opposition and take actions on areas we can. We will not imprison them for expressing themselves either. But actions to make the government responsible should come from within the legal boundary and not buy crashing the MNDF gate or jumping from the gate of the President’s residence while he is sleeping” he said.  .
