Presidential envoys meet with prisoners from Himandhoo Standoff

Ibrahim Hussain Zaki, president’s special envoy and Hassan Afeef, president’s political advisor had met with the prisoners from Himandhoo standoff who are imprisoned at Maafushi jail. They were also accompanied by Mohamed Saeed Ali Shaheem, State Minister of Islamic Affairs and Hisaan Hussain, legal affairs secretary at the President’s Office.
During a tour by President Nasheed to North Ari Atoll President had visited A. A. Himendhoo, the location of fierce battle between the security forces and religious extremists on October 2007. President also said that he is considering easing the sentences of those who had been sentenced after the standoff as they comprise a majority of the youth. He also said that it would be done so in a schedule prepared by him and that necessary consultations would be held with relevant stakeholders. He also said that the action would be taken under the Clemency Act of the Maldives.
He also said that as many male youth are detained in jails, social fabric of the island is hurt and island’s development had virtually stopped.
President also said that he had asked Himandhoo councilor to meet with the detainees and asked Ibrahim Hussain Zaki, President’s special envoy and Hassan Afeef, president’s political advisor to attend the meeting.
The delegation from the President explained the prisoners how the legal process is going to take place and conveyed president’s wish that he does not want further troubles when they are released.
