No confidence motion on the finance minister to be submitted to Parliament

MP for Kulhudhuffushi South has said that some members are endeavoring to submit a no confidence vote on Minister of Finance and Treasury, Ali Hashim.
Speaking at a show aired by DhiTV, he also said that he would be one of the first to sign the petition for no action motion.
According to reports, Abdulla Yaameen, MP for Mulaku and leader of the PA is leading the drive. Finance Minister however was not available for comments.
Ali Waheed, MP for A. A. Thoddoo, and a candidate competing for the vice-presidency of DRP said that the motion had not been submitted to DRP’s parliamentary group, and when the group endorses it, he will be at the forefront canvassing support for the party’s position. Ali Waheed also said that all the issues which he had involved in had been endorsed by the parliamentary group as well.
Miadhu Daily also understands that the main reason for the motion is Finance Minister’s failure to honour the agreement between his Ministry and Civil Service Commission on reinstating civil servants salary.
After the conclusion of the agreed period for reducing the wages of the government from October to December 2009, Civil Service Commission said that the salaries would be reinstated in January 2010. Civil Service Commission also said that Finance Ministry had failed to cooperate with the Commission on reinstating the salaries.
Latest press release by the Commission has said that paying full salary is a right prescribed in the constitution and articulated by the Employment Act of Maldives and that the Commission would sue the Finance Ministry on the issue.
Finance Ministry has said that the reason salaries cannot be reinstated is that it will jeopardize the agreement between IMF and the government on its standby loan arrangement. Although salaries of the civil servants had not been reinstated, salaries for the independent commissions are already reinstated.
