MNBC denies reports on TVM privatization

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Ibrahim Khaleel, Managing-Director of the Maldives National Broadcasting Cooperation had denied the reports which stated that Television Maldives would be privatized. But Khaleel confirmed that as the TVM is moving from a public financed channel to a commercially financed channel, TVM is in the process of identifying a company which would partner with the TVM. According to Khaleel three parties had already expressed interest, with one party at least being a foreign one.

MD also said that the process would be transparent and said that the government does not influence the content of the MNBC’s Television Maldives and Voice of Maldives. An expert who visited Maldives to assist TVM’s efforts to move to a full-fledged public broadcaster has said that TVM should not promote the government or a certain party or a certain commercial interest if it wishes to be a true public broadcaster.

MNBC’s Chairman, Mohamed Waheed has also said that the public broadcasting company’s goal should be to serve the people independently and MNBC should not work to promote the government or expose the opposition.
