Maldives to replicate ‘Tihar’ model for prisoners’ reform
Article Tools
Impressed by the reformation and recreational activities being carried out in the country’s largest Tihar Prisons, Maldives is now considering adopting the same model for all its jails.
A high-level delegation recently made a visit to Tihar to analyze different programmes and other activities that run inside the prison premises.
“Maldivian Home Minister Mohamed Shihab and Ahmed Faseeh, Commissioner of Police were in Tihar Prisons a couple of days back,” Tihar spokesperson and law officer Sunil Gupta said.
He said, “They visited us because they had heard a lot about the reformation work being carried out in our prison. They made the rounds of the prison so that they could pick and choose what all could be replicated in their jails too.”
Both the delegates went around the complete prison and were surprised that yoga and meditation facilities existed for prisoners, Gupta said.
Maldivian Home Minister and Commissioner of Police visited the factory and also went through the reformation activities that were being conducted inside the prison premises.
Gupta said, “The factory and its huge turnover and the good that it did for the prisoners impressed them the most. This is despite the overcrowding here.”
