Some offices “closed” because of the protests

Ministry of Finance and Treasury has said that the Ministry did not send a cheque reinstate the salary of the Attorney-General’s Office. Minister of State for Finance and Treasury said that the reports which stated Finance had sent a cheque to protesting staff at the AG Office is totally baseless.

Ahmed Shakir, Assistant DG at the AG Office said that his Office did receive a cheque worth of MRF 577,164.91 (USD 44,916) signed by a senior official at the Ministry. However, Shakir also said that his office received a call from the Ministry which said that the cheque was an oversight by the Ministry.

Shakir also said that they will negotiate with the Civil Service Commission on the salary later yesterday.

Around 40 staff at the AG Office had protested yesterday saying that they would not work until their salaries are reinstated. Staff at the Fisheries Ministry had also joined the protest and a senior official at the Ministry said that many at the Ministry were dissatisfied with the fact that salary is not reinstated for the civil servants while those of the independent commissions were reinstated.

He also said that many at his Ministry have decided not to work fully, as long as they do not receive full salary. A demonstration was also held yesterday in front of the Finance Ministry on the salary, which increased police presence at the Finance Ministry area.

In addition to AG Office and Fisheries Ministry, some other offices are considering protesting, as Finance Ministry had not paid full salary as announced by the Commission.

Tourism Ministry had also asked for an opinion from AG Office on working from 8 am to 2 30 pm until salaries are reinstated.

While Finance Ministry has said that it would not be possible to provide full salaries from January onwards, salaries of the independent commissions are already reinstated as according as decided by the Parliament. Many civil servants are demoralized and disappointed that their salaries are not reinstated while those of the independent commissions are already reinstated.

  1. Where are the DRP members who are taking full salary from Majlis and were supposedly protesting? If these people were honest they would not have passed a bill re-instating salaries of commissions. We need to live within our means and stop the culture of printing money and giving worthless high salaries. If anyone wants to be a millionnaire, please go and settle in Indonesia. Every working men and women are millionnaires in Indonesia. To buy an apple, however, you must pay 15,000 Indonesian Rupiah. All the salaries must have been reduced by the same percentage. Majlis members and independent commissions’ too must have given up 15% like civil servants and solved our deficit problems. In the mean time Bank of Maldives should collect all the overdue loans from people like Thasmeen and allow the industrious people of Maldives to have a shot at their skills in establishing businesses. We need high competition and easy access to loans rather than few elite enjoying all the bounties.
