Democracy cannot be sustained by a clan-style party – Dr. Shaheed

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

Foreign Minister Dr. Ahmed Shaheed has said that a party which is run like a clan, or a political party which had accustomed itself into a clan-style decision-making, would not be successful in sustaining democratic values. Speaking to Miadhu Daily he also said that MDP is by far the best internal democracy in the country and said therefore it is in the best position to strengthen country’s democracy.

Dr. Ahmed Shaheed also said that DRP is not in a position to water the country’s democracy and that DRP does not have that ability.

Foreign Minister also said that in the decision-making process of the parties, it should never take decisions to deliberately favour a certain individual who will benefit from those decisions, which according to Dr. Shaheed is a main failure in DRP.

He also called on all the political parties which had originally aligned MDP in the run-off of the presidential elections to join MDP. He also specifically called on the members of the Maldives National Congress, Adhaalathu and National Alliance Party to join MDP.

  1. Dr Shaheed. When people become political animals they forget there is something called shame. But eventually all such animals like yourself come to an end and history tells us that it happens to be a grevious one.

  2. I couldnt agree more with Dr Shaheed. There isnt a strong enough driving force or idea in DRP that will make them successful. They are imitating what MDP did when they came into power. However, that approach worked in a dictatorship environment with a lot of foreign community support. DRP has neither, government is democratic and there wont be any outside support.

I urge DRP guys, your efforts are equivalent to selling dates in Basra.
