As it is only a week away from DRP’s congress candidates who seek election are campaigning big time. However, Miadhu Daily has received reports that a faction is building within the DRP and certain pressure and actions are developing within the party, including changes to the party’s charter which would disallow his candidacy to deputy leadership of the party. Proposed changes includes that the candidates who seek election to senior positions of the party shall be a member of the party for the last six months. If this amendment is endorsed by the congress Umar would not be able to compete for the position.

Disagreements among the senior officials of the party are widespread on the way which delegates are elected to congress as well. Complaints had been forwarded to Party Leader Maumoon as well, as the process is going contrary to what is prescribed in the party’s charter. Maumoon had also called party members to make the congress as an event which will increase the love and respect which Maldivians have for the party. Maumoon has also said that the party members should go for the internal procedures within the party before going to public, if they have any grievances.

Elections Commission has said that the Islamic Democratic Party could not be dissolved as requested by the party leader Umar Naseer. .

Commission said that in the meetings which decided on dissolving a party, its legal quorum was not present and that despite the request to abolish the party the Commission could not abolish the party as it violates the rights of the ordinary members of the party.

Despite actions against him, many DRP members believe that Umar’s support has increased within the party, mainly due to because of his participation in Ihuthijaagu groups. They have also saod that Umar Naseer seems outgoing and that he is an excellent choice for a leadership position.
