Prisoners released for house arrest to receive rehabilitation

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

Home Ministry has said that the prisoners who were transferred to house arrest would begin rehabilitation this week.

State Minister Ahmed Adhil said that the rehabilitation for them would be conducted in Male’. The rehabilitation would then be transferred to “Asseyri Jail” at Gaamaadhoo Island, which would last for 6 months.

Adhil also said that after the treatment they would be released, although their actions would be monitored for another year. If they commit another crime they would return back to prison to complete the reminder of the previous sentence as well.

Adhil also said that some prisoners who were receiving treatment in Gaamaadhoo were sent back to prison, because of their failure to abide by the rules for the rehabilitation.

Residents of Male had expressed displeasure on the government’s decision to bring prisoners to Male for treatment. They also believe that this move would increase the already high crime rates in Male.

However, Home Minister Mohamed Shihab had previously said that those prisoners would be monitored and if they fail to meet the conditions of their house arrest, they would be returned back to the prison. He also said that Home Ministry would utilize all the resources it can to rehabilitate the prisoners back into the society.
