Police did not remove handcuffs and released demonstrators on MPs requests
Article Tools
Maldives Police Service had issued a press release denying that it had removed handcuffs and released some of the demonstrators because of pressure from MPs, in their attempt to disperse crowds near Parliament building on 30 December 2009. The Police also noted that rumors had been circulating around, implying that Police had removed handcuffs of some demonstrators and released them, because MPs had asked them to do so.
Police also called on the political parties not to spread false reports for political purposes, which it believed would diminish the respect it enjoys among the Maldivian community.
