Police arrest Sheereen’s boyfriend regarding the death case

Monday, January 11th, 2010

Police had said that they have arrested a man in connection to the death of Mariyam Sheereen, who was found dead in M. Angaagiri on 3 January.

Police had identified that man as Ahmed Najaah, 30, of Ocean Villa/L. Kalhaidhoo, Sheereen’s boyfriend who lived together with her.

In a press conference held, Police said that her dead body was recovered 36 hours after her death, but said that Police does not believe that she had been at M. Angaagiri for 36 hours.

Police also said that the dead body had been carried to M. Angaagiri on 2 January in a 2 ½ feet long suitcase, by Najaah himself. The body was transported in a taxi. Najaah had also taken the suitcase back to her apartment after dumping her under sandbags where she was discovered. The suitcase is now with the Police, and it has necessary evidence regarding the case as well according to the Police.

Police also said that no one else had been arrested regarding the case, but a man named Mirufathu Haneef who lives in the same apartment as Sheereen had been questioned. Police had not identified any links between Mirufath and Sheereen’s death.

Sheereen, a mother of 4 children, had been found dead on 3 January in a construction site. She was last seen alive on 31 December 2009.

Police also said that although Najaah responds to Police questions, he had not been fully cooperative and Miadhu Daly had also learned that he has been trying to hurt himself. Miadhu Daily also understands that despite the overwhelming evidence against him, he had not yet confessed.

Even before Sheereen’s death Najaah had been sentenced to jail. Although Haneef had cleaned up Sheereen’s room because of an unusual smell, he did so without informing the Police.
