Mid-term election is a electoral pledge by President and VP – Jameel

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

Dr. Mohamed Jameel, senior member of the Dhivehi Qaumee Party, has said that a midterm election is an electoral pledge by the Mohamed Nasheed and Dr Mohamed Waheed, then presidential and vice-presidential candidates from the MDP coalition. He also expressed concern that President Nasheed has now reversed his earlier position.

President Nasheed’s government’s first Communications Minister, who resigned from the post after short period of time said that MDP’s pledge to host midterm elections is as important as the key five pledges of the MDP government. He also said that the DQP had played a key role in galvanizing support for the Candidate Nasheed in the run-off, who only managed to obtain 25% of the votes in the first round.

“A Midterm election was not as he described it on DhiFM one to one on 1 January. Both President Nasheed and Vice President Waheed had given their concurrence for the midterm elections. President Nasheed said that in a meeting held in S. Hithadhoo Muhibudhdheen School and Vice-President Waheed said that in an MDP meeting held in Haruge. The pledge to hold midterm elections was made without any pressure and that is a very clear one, but I regret that President Nasheed has reversed his position now. What we now know is that facts will always remain as facts and that President Nasheed would not be re-elected” he said.

Although Dr. Jameel had interpreted otherwise, on 1 January 2010 President Nasheed, implying the unpopularity of the idea to hold midterm elections said that the party which advocated for a midterm election only won two seats in the parliamentary elections, even which can be questioned how much the party contributed to their victories.

President also said that he pledged for a midterm election because he is not eager to hold presidency for too long and because he does not wish to be a hurdle for other politicians.

The party which called on a midterm election is Dr. Hassan Saeed’s Dhivehi Qaumee Party which pledged its allegiance to President Nasheed unconditionally after coming to the third place in the first round of the presidential elections. Dr. Hassan Saeed served an Attorney-General in President Gayyoom’s regime but resigned from the post and championed himself as a reformer, competing in the first round of the presidential elections as a serious contender.

He also served as an advisor to the President during the early stages of the MDP government, however resigned from the post saying that President does not seek his advice.
