Maldives has requested vaccine against swine flu – German authorities

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

German authorities have said that the Maldives has requested swine flu vaccines from Germany.

Europeans are reselling the vaccinations they had purchased for their people as they had been refusing to take vaccines against swine flu. Countries like Germany have said that it would provide part of its stock for free to those countries seeking the vaccination.

According to a statement released by the French Health Ministry, the country had bought 94 million doses of the H1N1 vaccine worth about 869 million euros (1.25 billion dollars) — sufficient for almost one and a half for every member of the population, thinking that everyone would need two jabs.

The Health Ministry confirmed that the country has already sold 300,000 shots to Qatar and is set to sell two million more to Egypt, adding that “We are in contact with other countries, notably Ukraine and Mexico [to sell the excess vaccines].”

Italian authorities, on the other hand, claimed that while their country had not yet decided to sell its excess stock, they are giving 10 percent of it to impoverished countries.

Many countries had reported that the new cases identified have started to reduce although risk of a major outbreak is still possible.
