I have never ordered to torture anyone – Maumoon
Article Tools
Answering a question posed by a listener during an interview to DhiFM “One-to-One” former President Maumoon had denied allegations of torture. Speaking at the programme he said that he had never ordered to torture a Maldivian or non-Maldivian in Maldives jails nor any act of torture had taken place with his advance knowledge.
He also said that he had always received complains from the public on alleged torture cases in the Maldives jails and investigated such complaints. He also said that some such complaints had been investigated by independent commissions and such cases had been tried at the Maldivian courts as well.
He also noted that if law enforcement officials had been convicted of torture, they would have served their sentences.
When a listener questioned why he does not attend Friday prayers these days, he said that if he attends prayers his supporters would gather around him to shake hands, which might imply that he is using Friday prayer as a political tool and unhappily he has decided to stay at home.
When a listen questioned him why he has reinstated his brother in law, Ilyas Ibrahim twice after convicting him twice, he said that Ilyas Ibrahim is a very capable man and his decision to reinstate him was taken on the grounds that Ilyas’s service would benefit Maldivian people. Speaking further he said that Ilyas was not the only one he had reinstated, but the list includes Ahmed Naseem of Hikifinifenmaage and “Karoa” Abbas as well.
