Fisheries subsidies to help fishermen – Minister

Dr. Ibrahim Did, Minister if Fisheries and Agriculture has said that methods to distribute MRF 50 million to be issued as subsidies for fisheries sector is being discussed with the fishermen and vessel owners, to identify the ways in which it will effect the fishermen most.
Speaking to Miadhu Daily, he also said that the rules for that would be sent for approval by the Parliament Committee as endorsed by the parliament.
“As the industry is having a hard time and subsidies are aimed to help them with the situation, we will discuss this with the fishermen and vessel-owners to identify most effective ways to dispense those funds” Dr. Didi said. He also implied that the subsidies would be used to assist them in paying the loans, providing health insurance and in the registration of the ships as per the new regulation.
Minister also said that in previous years subsidies has been received by boats that had never been fishing in that particular year and that it have been abused in the previous years. He said that the new government will try to dispense the funds in a just and effective way.
As EU has refused purchasing fish and fish products from illegal and unregulated fishing, Government has asked the local fishermen to register their vessels and that fish catch from unregistered boats would not be exported from the country.
