12 million to be paid for political parties from budget 2010

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

Fuad Thauwfeeg, President of the Elections Commission has said that MRF 12,762,119.00 will be paid for the political parties from the 2010 annual budget.

Speaking to Miadhu Daily, he also said that money will be paid for the dormant parties this year as well although the Commission is trying to send the issue for Parliament to take a decision on that.

He also said that the Commission wanted to do that in 2009 as well but was forced to slow down the process because of the election of new members of the Commission.

“I hope that this could be sent to Parliament this week. We need the Parliament to take a decision on that. If a decision is not taken by the Parliament we will have to pay money for the dormant parties as well” President of the Elections Commission said.

As there are 13 parties in the Maldives, a political party is registered for every 23,000 Maldivians.

Elections Commission records show that 28,000 members are in MDP although the party believes its membership total as 35,000.

Some parties do not even have 1000 members in it while other parties had not held any political activity for a year.
