Veteran MP Ismail Naseer dies

Veteran parliamentarian Ismail Naseer has passed away yesterday after a prolonged illness. Late Ismail Naseer has served as MP for Thaa Atoll and Laamu Atoll for 20 years. He was acclaimed for articulating very strong democratic and reform ideals during his long service as MP. Naseer also served as Atoll Chief in several atolls and was admired for his good administrative approach and close rapport with the common people. Ismail Naseer was 77 years when he died and was survived by 6 sons and 3 daughters.

A very large number of people including President Mohamed Naseed, ministers, MPs, friends, well wishers and public attended his funeral. Funeral prayer was held at Muhammad Thaurufaanu Mosque after noon prayers yesterday. State Minister of Religious Affairs Mohamed Shaheem led the funeral prayers.

Ismail Naseer is father of Ibrahim Ismail, Ibra who is one of pioneers of the reform struggle that has given birth to the democracy introduced in the country and who was the first President of the ruling MDP. Ibra was MP for Male in the last Majlis where he spoke relentlessly for reform and democracy and rule of law thus making a huge contribution to the Peoples Majlis and Peoples Special Majlis. Ibra was chair of the Committee that drafted the new Constitution.
