State Trading Organization has said that it will begin the sales of its onion shipment.
Speaking to Miadhu Daily STO General Manager Ahmed Niyaaz said that the onion shipment would be in Male harbor later today, an effort by STO to reduce the market price of onion. However, because Friday would be an off day the shipment can only be cleared on Saturday and begin the sales immediately.
He also said that STO shipment is a small one, as private parties are also importing onions in a near future. However, he also said that STO would continue its weekly shipments until the prices normalize in the market. He also said that in order to assist a speedy sales, STO Supermarket will also sell 25 kg bags to small stores, requesting them to be sold in a set price by STO.
“We can only request them, in an open economy you can’t force. But if there are parties which do not fulfill our requests they will be noted. And we will consider taking action against them in future” he said.
