Article Tools
Scotland has decided to assist Maldives in its plans to go carbon-neutral by 2020. Speaking from Scotland Ahmed Shafeeg, Special Envoy for Science and Technology said that Scotland is a country which already operates large wind farms and a country which had already got green technology. He also said that Scotland’s decision to assist Maldives is a great achievement for the President Nasheed’s carbon-neutral policy.
According to him, two governments are scheduled to sign an agreement later today. Under the agreement Scotland would provide technical assistance to the Maldives and has also discussed the possibility of providing financial assistance to go carbon-neutral.
In a press conference held jointly by the Shafeeg and Alex Solomon, Scotland’s First Minister, Solomon said that Scotland will reduce its emitance by 42% by 2020 and will work to push the other countries to do the same.
He also said that the decision to help Maldives comes as a gesture to support the leading role by the President Nasheed to counter climate change and because Scotland believes only a joint effort by the nations could make a change.
Shafeeg also said that the decision by the Scotland shall clear any doubt on the Maldives’s seriousness to go carbon-neutral in ten years and that it is a sign of the international support the initiative enjoys.
