Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

annicopen300President Mohamed Nasheed has today participated at a meeting hosted by Ms Helen Clark, Administrator of UNDP and the former Prime Minister of New Zealand, for Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The meeting was held at the Bella Centre, where the UN Climate Conference in Copenhagen is taking place.

At the meeting, President Nasheed raised concerns for not achieving a deal that sets targets for 350ppm carbon level.

350 parts per million is what many scientists say is the safe upper limit for CO2 in our atmosphere.

He said that given the track of the negotiations, it now appeared that it was now set at 380ppm.

The President emphasised that reducing carbon levels to 350ppm was crucial for the survival of small island states such as the Maldives.

The Maldives is pushing for an agreement to reduce carbon levels to 350ppm.
