Maldives news reaches top ten new on Olympics

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

Maldives president’s remarks regarding the hosting of 2024 winter Olympics in the Maldives have reached the top 10 of the Olympic news.

The original news article said that the President Nasheed has said that the country will bid to host 2024 winter Olympics, before sarcastically adding “but the problem is by then half of the country would have been submerged into the rising sea-levels”. He also joked that the Maldivians would now have to learn those games which could be played underwater.

Some news articles are dismissing it as a serious bid but a remark by the President to highlight the importance of climate change to Maldives. Although Maldives is not in a position to hold games, some articles had also said that it could be a good idea to host the water events in the Maldives.

President Nasheed had been a key leader in the global climate change debate and had a high profile during the COP 15 in Copenhagen this month.
