Article Tools
The Committee selected by the Peoples Majlis to study and submit a report on the proposed budget for 2010 is progressing its work, Miadhu learns from reliable sources. This news came to light following reports revealed by some media sources which said the Committee has stopped its work because of non availability of the necessary information about the budget from the Government. However, according to informed sources the budget committee is studying the budget and the Committee have also met with some of the concerned Government Ministers and officials to clarify various points raised by the members of the Committee and obtain more information on the budget. The Committee has also written to the Finance Ministry regarding additional information.
There are reports that some of the points raised by the Committee were not sufficiently answered by the officials who attended the meetings of the Budget Committee at the request of the Committee. The Committee is chaired by the Deputy Speaker and Mulaku Member Ahmed Nazim.
The budget debate closed yesterday after the meeting was extended until all those members who have requested to participate in the debate and who had not done so in the previous meetings of the debate have made their contribution to the debate. Yesterdays meeting was a mix of approval and objection to the budget based on party line. The opposition DRP has severely criticised the budget saying it does not include the most needed development projects and service needed to the people as promised by the ruling MDP during its election campaigns and afterwards. The ruling MDP members however strongly defended the budget saying it is a budget of hope and reality which will deliver their promises and save the country from the economic and social destruction plunged by the Government of former President Maumoon Abdul . MDP members assured the budget will bring the country the much needed prosperity and development in a sustainable manner and according to the principles and recommendations of international financial institutions.
Minister of Finance and Treasury Ali Hashim proposed medium term budget for 2010 amounting to MRf 11.9 billion which has a MRf 4.6 billion deficit. The Minister pointed out that the deficit would be covered from MRf 1 billion to be provided by foreign sources on various development projects, MRf 348 million from foreign loans, MRf 1.3 from privatisation of government companies and MRf 1.9 billion from sale of treasury bills.
DRP has said this is the worst budget ever proposed by the Government and it will further worsen the pathetic situation and suffering of the people. The Majlis will take a vote on the budget after receiving the report of the Committee.
