Friday, December 18th, 2009

hrc3Human Rights Commission of the Maldives has said that it is important to assess the advantages and disadvantages of revisiting the country’s past, in a press release responding to President Nasheed’s radio address which said that the HRCM would not be complete if they do not investigate the human rights abuses of the past 30 years.

Commission said that it supports understanding such abuses in principle, however said that the Commission lacks the mandate and legality to investigate them. The Commission also said that countries like Timore-Leste, South Africa, USA, Germany and Liberia, has established separate entities with the legality and mandate was established independent from the National Human Rights Body.

The main aim of such investigation should be to learn the lesions from such abuses and to prevent such abuses happening in the future, and it should not divide the society further, according to the Commission.
