Food Authority closes 7 illegal eateries

thashi3In the ongoing special inspection of eateries opened for expatriates conducted by Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA), the Authority has issued closing orders to 7 such eateries.

MFDA visited 11 expatriates eateries on the 8th of this month and 7 eateries were issued orders to close down as food prepared in these places were deemed unhygienic by health inspectors. Health inspectors from MFDA noted that when they went to recheck these 7 places on the next day, 3 places were completely shut down and had stopped its business.

The rest of the 4 places which had remained opened for business, were closed down with the help of Maldives Police Service (MPS) after the expatriates in charge of these places were taken in to custody.

MFDA further stated that they will still continue to conduct checks on food outlets and eateries based upon public complaints that they have received and also other places as well.

MFDA is initiating this as they have received reports of several eateries being operated with out proper registration with the government and also due to low hygienic maintenance of eateries opened for expatriates.

The purpose of these inspections, according to MFDA was due to fear of outbreak of a disease owing to low hygiene in these places.

These inspections is being carried out by MFDA with the help of Male’ Municipality and MPS beginning on 8 December.
