Article Tools
A draft regulation which calls on the Government to restrict the sale of alcohol in the inhabited islands was rejected by the Majlis after the initial vote to accept the bill into the Majlis floor. The bill was proposed by MP for Fares-Mathoda, Ibrahim Muththalibu. During the yesterdays sitting the MPs who spoke on the regulation stated that although the motive behind the draft is good, some provisions of the draft is not very clear and some provisions of the regulation is contradictory to Islamic principles and therefore Majlis should reject the bill. In the vote whether to accept the bill or not, 23 MPs voted to accept the bill and 28 voted against accepting the bill while 6 MPs abstained.
The debate on the bill was further heated by some comments made by the proponent of the draft. The debate got tense because some MPs were refused to take the floor on point of order. In the heated debate, meeting was suspended at 1015 hrs because of the absence of the quorum.
However when the meeting was reconvened after the intervals Majlis decided to reject the draft bill. Muththalibu also said that he will submit another bill on the same subject very soon.
