USD 50 million saved if education developed– President

President Mohamed Nasheed said that USD 50 million is spent even now for Maldivians studying abroad to study what is available in Maldives and that this amount can be saved and kept off from going out of the country if the education sector of Maldives is further developed.

He said this speaking at the ceremony held in President’s Office on Wednesday to sign the agreement between Education Ministry and Shri Educare to privatize Giyasudheen School.

President Nasheed said that even now there were more than 5000 locals studying abroad what is taught in Maldivian schools. That is in countries like India, Malaysia and Sri Lanka studying from grade 1 to grade 12.

President Nasheed said that when these students are studying, they are accompanied by their whole family and this increases the expense further more. President added that parents would not want to go abroad if the standard of education provided in the country is further upgraded and improved.

Also speaking at the ceremony Education Minister Dr Musthafa Luthfee said that for a long time education sector in Maldives was developed to accommodate as many students as possible and not to improve the standard of education in the country.

Under the agreement signed between Maldives and Shri Educare, Giyasudheen School will be managed by Shri Educare for 15 years. With this agreement, the name of the school will change to Giyaasudheen International School.

The education ministry will soon privatize 4 more schools under the government’s public-private partnership policy. The schools include Ameer Ahmed School, Afeefudheen in Kulhudufushi, Gan Primary School in Laamu Gan and Nooranee School in Seenu atoll.
