Scorched fishing boat sinks
Article Tools
A fishing boat, ‘Permata 212’ that caught fire on 21 November has submerged into the sea yesterday morning while an operation to put out the fire was in progress.
According to Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) fire and rescue department, even though the fire caught outside the boat was controlled, inner sections of the boat was still burning yesterday. The boat was towed from its point of anchor, which was between Male and Villingilli, to Gaadhookolaa late Sunday night and it sank in this area.
MNDF cautioned that items from the boat may float and so informed those travelling in this area to be aware of this.
The Fire and Rescue department of MNDF received reports of the fire around 03.47 am of Saturday and after one hour they had controlled 90% of the fire though inner parts of the vessel were still burning. They were aware of the possibility that the boat may sink so water used to extinguish the fire was pumped out of the boat by the officers but despite their efforts, the vessel sank.
This vessel is a foreign one and reportedly, only three men were on board the vessel when it caught fire but they successfully escaped the fire. It is not yet known what caused the fire.
