Prince Andrew’s plane landed in Addu Atoll, former British Royal Air Force (RAF) base in Maldives. He was welcomed by President Mohamed Nasheed, Vice President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan and their wives.
They were also joined by Minister of Defense and National Security Ameen Faisal, Minister of Home Affairs Mohamed Shihab, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Dr Ahmed Ali Sawad, Minister of Finance and Treasury Ali Hashim, Minister of Civil Aviation Dr Mahmood Razi and Minister of Education Dr Musthafa Luthfee. In addition to this, some members of the Peoples Majlis as well as other senior officials of the state also were present.
This visit to Maldives by Prince Phillip is a personal one and so no news of this event has come out from any official sources.
Prince Andrew visited Maldives on 3 December 2008, again on an unofficial visit. In this visit as well, President Nasheed met with Prince Andrew but this time at the President’s Office where they discussed on the ways of strengthening bilateral relations and on possible areas of cooperation between the Maldives and the United Kingdom.
Prince Andrew is the United Kingdom’s Special Representative for International Trade and Investment.
