President submits Bill on right to information to Majlis

3majPresident Mohamed Nasheed has submitted a Bill on Right to Information to People’s Majlis yesterday.

This bill is being submitted to the Majlis to enable the government can carry out its activities in a transparent and an answerable manner. This is also to further strengthen and broaden the areas involved in right to information.

The Bill would also enable citizens to acquire information that are with the government.

In the region, India was the first to pass the Right to Information bill. When it became an Act in 2004, the impact of it has almost been immediate, with an increasing number of citizens making information requests that have exposed a number of corrupt practices and even embarrassed the government into addressing such practices.
