President officially informed of no-confidence motion – Speaker

The Speaker of the People’s Majlis, Abdullah Shaahid has said that President Mohamed Nasheed was officially informed through a letter about the no-confidence motion against Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Ahmed Shaheed.
Speaker Abdullah Shaahid said this in a letter addressed to the President, in response to President’s letter on 8 November stating that he wished to be officially informed when a no-confidence motion is initiated against one of his ministers and that he had not been informed from the Majlis about the impending no-confidence motion against Foreign Minister Dr.Shaheed.
In the letter sent by Speaker Shaahid to President Nasheed yesterday, Speaker said that the President was informed on 27 October of the no-confidence motion against Dr. Shaheed which was submitted with 35 signatures. In addition to this, the letter also stated that Dr Shaheed was also informed in accordance with the constitution which stipulates that the minister should be informed before 14 days of initiating the motion in the Majlis floor. In this regard, Dr Shaheed was sent a notice on 27 October.
In the letter sent to Speaker by President Nasheed on 8 of November, he had written that neither the President nor Foreign Minister Dr Shaheed were officially informed of the no-confidence motion and the 14 days that should be given to the minister before the motion hits the floor, as the constitution stipulated, has not fully passed.
