Mosque building was a political agenda – Islamic Minister
Article Tools
Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Abdul Majeed Abdul Baaree has said that the project of building mosques in Male and near by islands was a political agenda of the previous administration.
Islamic Minister said this speaking before he left to participate at the annual meeting of World Islamic Call Society to be held in Libya.
Islamic Minister Dr Baaree said that towards the end of Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s tenure as President of Maldives, he had initiated mosque building project and signed the agreements with contractors without giving a thought to how so many mosques can be built.
“There was not much money to go forward with this project; contractors were over burdened with work. This shows that building mosques was not something that they really wanted to do.” said Dr Baaree.
He also said that they were receiving a lot of complaints from the public because of slow progress of mosque construction work but since not much has been done by the previous government to go forward with this work, Islamic Minister said that they were facing a lot of obstacles because of this.
Dr Baaree said that in some cases previous administration had promised to build large mosques in islands where already large mosques were built by private people. He said that this should not have been done as there were islands where mosques were in dire need due to space constraints in the small mosques.
