Maumoon should take responsibility for 3 November attack – Afeef

afeef300President Mohamed Nasheed’s Political Advisor Hassan Afeef has said that former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom should take the responsibility for the 3 November 1988 attack on Maldives. He said this speaking at the meeting held on the occasion of Victory Day in Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Haruge on Tuesday evening.

Hassan Afeef said that even though former President Maumoon was aware of an impending terrorist attack to Maldives, he had not taken efficient preventive steps. He further said that Maumoon should also take the responsibility because Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) was not alerted and proper arrangements was not made for MNDF to prepare for an offensive as he was the Commander in Chief of the MNDF.

Hassan Afeef said that attacks such as November 3 occur because public’s patience with dictatorial and oppressive governments is stretched. He added that plans to overthrow the government were a common occurrence in Maldives.

Even though Hassan Afeef said this, some senior officers of MNDF had said that former MNDF, National Security Services (NSS), was not equipped for any armed aggression from outside the country but that they had means and capacity to deal with internal security.

Besides Afeef, MDP chairperson Maria Ahmed Didi also spoke at the meeting. She said that there was no way that Maumoon cannot be held responsible for 3 November 1988 attack to Maldives.

Many senior officials of MDP such as Defense Minister Ameen Faisal called out to the government to re-investigate into attacks of 1988. Minister Faisal said that it was not acceptable that
