Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

Maldivians have made a special supplication to Almighty Allah thanking for the bountiful blessings bestowed on them. As part of the various programs and activities to mark the Victory Day this supplication was made in all mosques after zuhur prayer. There were large crowds in most mosques and all of them participated in the supplication.

In the supplication they thanked Allah for blessing on them the Religion of Islam and independence. They prayed from Allah to continue these blessings and save the country and people from enemies and aggression and bestow peace, harmony and prosperity on the people and country. They prayed for the mercy of Allah to guide the people in the right path and protect them from all evils and vices. They prayed to save the country from curses and calamities and bless the nation with progress and prosperity.

Victory Day is marked on 3 November every year following the crushing of the armed aggression on 3 November 1988. Armed Tamil militants from neighboring Sri Lanka joined by some Maldivian’s launched a surprise attack on capital Male’ at dawn on 3 November and attempted to take over army headquarters and the Government. The attackers arrived in some fishing trawlers travelling within the atolls. Indian military had also come and helped the Government restore normalcy. While most of the militants were killed in the fight, several persons from the Maldivian military and civilians were also killed in the attack.

Critics blame the former Government for their complacency and negligence as there were reports of prior warnings of such an attack.
