Maldives wind farm project grabs world attention

The Gaafaru wind farm project that was inaugurated by President Mohamed Nasheed on Monday has grabbed the attention of the international community as the news was captured by the international media.
The Strait Times of Singapore described it as the beginning of Maldives efforts to make the country carbon neutral by 2020. It also noted that the setting up of the 75-megawatt farm would reduce carbon emissions by 25% in the country.
The Guardian of UK noted that this wind farm will deliver electricity for the whole of capital Male, the international airport and the surrounding resorts. It noted that the Maldives government was taking a lead on climate change mitigation in an effort to push larger countries into taking more determined action. The Guardian further said that wind farm was a good choice for our country as we have moderate but reliable winds that blow for most of the year.
Reuters noted that the government of Maldives was encouraging investments in power generation through wind, solar and other renewable energy sources in order to meet Maldives target of carbon neutrality by 2020.
The news of Gaafaru wind project was also picked up by Chinese Central Television (CCTV) and Xinhuanet. In addition to this, it was it was also noted by leading environmental activist websites.
State Electric Company Limited, STELCO, signed a 20-year agreement with Falcon Energy on Monday, whereby Falcon Energy will build and operate a 75 megawatt wind farm in Gaafaru island, North Male’ atoll. The $200 million foreign direct investment will see the construction of the latest generation wind turbines, which will be connected to the electricity grid of Male’ through a network of submarine electricity cables.
