Majlis opinion on Israel affects foreign aid
Article Tools
Minister of Housing, Transport and Environment Mohamed Aslam has said that the government faced obstacles in acquiring foreign aid for some developmental projects in the country due to People’s Majlis opinion of Israel.
He said this speaking at the Majlis session held yesterday during question time. He was questioned by Gaaf Alif Villingilli constituency member of Majlis Moahmed Ramiz about the delay in fulfilling the pledges President Mohamed Nasheed made to the residents on Gaaf Alif Kolamaafushi about developmental projects in that island.
Answering the queries of Mohamed Ramiz, Minister Aslam said that government had applied for assistance from Israeli government for developmental projects in some islands and one of these islands was Kolamaafushi.
Minister Aslam also said that the Israeli government had made some indication about providing assistance but due to Majlis opinion of Israel, there were now obstacles in acquiring assistance from that country. The Minister added that this assistance from Israeli government was not a loan.

Is the hard-line Islamic stance a wise choice for the Maldives. Some of these actions may scare off the tourists.
Will Arabia pay for the living expenses of the Maldivians where the tourist industry has dried up?
It is not a pretty picture – the Maldives are painting – if indeed a western nation – where to do the same – to Muslims – outlawing mosques and so on – Muslims around the world would be upset.
It appears from this article it may not be the tourism trade – that is affected – by the changes made to Maldivian law – it could also result in a reluctance by foreigners to invest – not only from Israel.
The talk of stoning, death for apostates, floggings, confiscation of bibles at airports, no religious freedoms and prison time for foreigners for offending Maldives religious laws on Islam.
Though the Middle East may be up for business – perhaps they will eventually make up most of the tourists and investors – all Sharia compliant?
I’d be worried!
