I have no connection to November 3 incident – Ameen Faisal
Article Tools
Minister of Defense and National Security Ameen Faisal has said that he has no connection to the coup attempt by Sri Lankan separatist organization People’s Liberation Organization of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE) and the Maldivian mercenaries.
In a special interview given to the November issue of the magazine “Ahdan”, a magazine of Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), Minister Faisal said that many people were throwing allegations that he was involved with November 3 incident and added that no court in Maldives has convicted him in connection to this case.
Ameen Faisal said that his termination from the defense force was due to personal animosity and that it was done because the former senior officials of MNDF were fearful of something.
“I have to say that during those times, officers who had studied or acquired training from abroad were viewed very differently. Senior officers, in those years, had no military training. Probably the senior officials were fearful of this factor, that is, because those with education and practical training may do far better than them. They kept on telling us that officers with training in foreign countries cannot stay in the Maldives force.” Ameen explained.
Minister Ameen said that he was studying in USA during the 3 November 1988 attack on Maldives and that he believed that Maldives was victorious on that day because of the courage and strength of the defense force. He noted that some of the defense officers who were martyred had no training to handle the situation and so they should not have been asked to go out on the street to face the mercenaries.
He further said that the martyred families still continue to receive allowances from the government and that this will not change.
