Hajj sermon calls Muslim leaders to abide by Sharia in policies and governance

hajj2009The Grand Mufti of Makka Sheihk Abdul Aziz Al -Sheikh has called upon leaders of Muslim countries to be faithful to Islam and abide by Islamic Sharia in Government policies and implementing affairs of the country. The learned Sheikh said so when he delivered an hour long sermon at Masjid Namira before performing Zuhur and Asru prayers combined in the Mt Arafat to the east of Makkah where nearly 3 million pilgrims converged to perform the ritual of standing in Arafat. This is one of the obligatory pillars of Hajj. This ritual in which pilgrims seek forgiveness from Allah Merciful marks the climax of Hajj. In the start he asked Muslims to be pious as piety guides people in the right path and protect them from wrong. He elaborated on the great prophetic mission of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, which accomplished the sublime message of Islam.

The Mufti warned Muslim leaders that ruling a country is a sacred responsibility entrusted to them and they should discharge that responsibility with honesty in the interest of the people. Leaders must pursue policies of equality and respect to the people. Emphasizing on the great importance of safeguarding the interest of the nation, the Sheikh said policies must not contradict the principles of Islam and Sharia. He also warned to refrain from what Allah has forbidden when making and implementing economic policies. Here he referred to usury and interest and reminded the people to give charity instead. The Mufty said the reason of several major companies bankrupting is because of indulging in forbidden and fraudulent business. He called Muslim leaders to be pious and warned to establish fair justice and refrain from dishonest actions and corruption.

Al -Asheih also called to establish fair justice to all and not to influence the judiciary. Speaking on the wealth and resources of the country, he underlined the importance of managing and looking after them carefully and make optimal benefits of the national wealth for the people. The Sheikh reminded the dire need of reducing dependence on others and achieving self reliance.

The Mufti strongly denounced terrorism saying Islam is free from terrorism. Terrorism has nothing with religion. It is done on self interest. He called on Muslims to refrain from such action. Islam deplores suicide. Exploding self is strongly prohibited in Islam. It is a serious crime and very cruel.

He warned about enemies of Islam who are ever attempting to break up and weaken Muslims and Ummah, therefore safeguarding the religion and protection the nation is a great responsibility, he said.

The Mufty referred to the continuing attempts by enemies to change and distort Holy Quran and the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet, and warned to be vigilant and mindful of these attempts.

The Mufty also spoke about the critical role of the media in protecting the Muslim Ummah and promote truth and fight against wrong. Media must be strong and courageous to promote the Ummah and maintain the good image of Islam. Here he said the media must play a responsible and pivotal to strength the bonds of Islam and community , guide the youth in the right path, protect them from evil influences and activities, and from becoming victims of evil behavior and wrong doings. He stressed on the responsibilities of families in maintaining good and pious children and families. He warned Muslims to keep their children and youth away from the TV channels and other media engaged in discrediting Islam and weakening the Muslim society. They are our enemies, they want destroy our religion and Ummah. Youth is their target, they want attract youth in anti Islamic ideals, the Mufty pointed out.

The Mufty highlighted on many the hostilities and confrontations effecting Muslim communities and innocent people and referred to the sufferings of the Palestinian people. Where is justice, where are the rights, he asked. He called for the attention of leaders of the world and thinkers on the many economic and political challenges facing the world. There is a growing greed to acquire more wealth and wage wars. How good it will be and how beneficial it can be to humanity if this money is spent for development instead. But there is competition for supremacy and power, it is a show of power in arms.

Speaking about the importance of education, he said to provide value based education and incorporate Islamic values and discipline in the syllabus of education as a priority. He called to provide best education to children while inculcating Islamic values. Children must be brought up well building in them strong belief in Islam. Youth is the future. A disciplined and well brought youth is indispensable for the Muslim Ummah to strengthen and grow .They must be thought Islamic culture and history too, to achieve this great task.

The sermon was watched by millions of Muslims in all parts of the world. The Pilgrims spend the day in Mt. Arafat in prayers and supplication and proceeded to Muzudalifa to spend the night there before going to Mina where they will celebrate Eid and cast pebbles to the Jamrat and make animal sacrifice.
