Gayoom’s oppression and dictatorship brought November 3 – Zaki

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

zak300iThe armed aggression of 3 November 1988 which attempted to overthrow the Government was the result of the oppression and dictatorship perpetrated by the former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, said Special Envoy of President Mohamed Nasheed, Ibrahim Hussain Zaki. Zaki was serving as the Foreign Secretary in Gayoom’s Government when armed militants from Sri Lanka arrived and attacked capital Male.

Zaki who also held portfolios of Tourism and Planning in Gayoom’s Government until he was dropped from the cabinet in 1993, said the aggression of November 3 would not have happened if Gayoom respected rule of law, justice and democratic transformation. Zaki who is a long standing leader in foreign affairs, who held the position of SAARC Secretary General, said this in an interview with Television Maldives (TVM) last night.

Gayoom’s youngest son Ghassan Maumoon however denied Zaki’s allegations saying his father ruled the country well. Ghassan is the most likely successor of Gayoom according to some analysts.
